Salalah: Oman’s green south

Salalah, in the southern region of Dhofar, is unlike anywhere else in Arabia. Every summer, the khareef (monsoon) brings mist and light rain from the Indian Ocean. It turns the mountains bright green, fills the wadis with waterfalls and drops temperatures to a pleasant 25°C. The rest of the year, Salalah offers long white beaches, coconut palms and banana plantations.

Dhofar is also the historic land of frankincense, once more valuable than gold.

Top things to see and do

Wadi Darbat: A green valley with a lake, small waterfalls and grazing camels. It is especially beautiful during and just after the khareef.

Al Mughsail Beach: A wide, beautiful beach with blowholes that shoot seawater into the air when the waves are strong.

The Land of Frankincense: Visit the UNESCO-listed Al Baleed Archaeological Park and its museum, and see frankincense trees at Wadi Dawkah.

Salalah souqs: Buy frankincense, oils and incense burners in Al Haffa Souq.

Ancient Sumhuram: Explore the ruins of this old trading port overlooking Khor Rori.

Best time to visit

Come during the khareef (July to mid-September) for green landscapes and cool weather, or from October to April for sunshine and beach weather. The sea can be rough during the monsoon, so swimming is not recommended then.

Getting there

Salalah is about 1.5 hours by plane from Muscat, with several flights a day. Driving takes around 10 to 12 hours across the desert.

Travel tips

Book flights and hotels early for the khareef season, as it is very busy with visitors from across the Gulf.

Mountain roads can be foggy during the khareef. Drive slowly or travel with a local guide.

Bring a light rain jacket in summer.

Musandam: the Norway of Arabia

Separated from the rest of Oman by the UAE, the Musandam Peninsula sits at the tip of the Arabian Peninsula on the Strait of Hormuz. Here, jagged mountains plunge straight into the sea and form dramatic fjords, or khors. Tiny fishing villages can only be reached by boat. The scenery is so striking that Musandam is often called the Norway of Arabia.

Top things to see and do

Dhow cruise: Spend a day sailing through Khor Ash Sham on a traditional dhow, with swimming and snorkeling stops.

Dolphin watching: Dolphins often swim alongside the boats in the fjords.

Telegraph Island: See the remains of a 19th-century British telegraph station on a small island in the fjord.

Khasab Castle: Visit the restored fort in the main town of Khasab.

Mountain drive to Jebel Harim: A 4×4 trip into the mountains offers breathtaking views over the fjords.

Best time to visit

The most pleasant months are October to April, when the weather is warm and the sea is calm.

Getting there

You can fly from Muscat to Khasab in about 1 hour and 20 minutes. Alternatively, travel by road through the UAE, which takes around 6 hours and requires border crossings and the correct visas. We can help you plan the best option.

Travel tips

If travelling by road, check visa and car insurance rules for crossing into and out of the UAE.

Bring swimwear, a towel and sun protection for the dhow cruise.

Seasickness is rare in the calm fjords, but bring tablets if you are sensitive.

Daymaniyat Islands: Oman’s underwater paradise

The Daymaniyat Islands are a chain of nine small, uninhabited islands off the coast near Muscat. They are protected as a nature reserve, and their coral reefs are among the best snorkeling and diving spots in the region. In the clear water you can see sea turtles, colourful reef fish, rays and, with luck, reef sharks. Dolphins are often seen on the boat ride out.

Top things to see and do

Snorkeling: Shallow coral gardens close to the beaches are perfect for snorkelers of all levels.

Scuba diving: Several dive sites suit both beginners and experienced divers.

Turtle spotting: Green and hawksbill turtles feed and nest around the islands.

Beach time: Relax on white sand beaches with turquoise water. Landing is allowed only at certain beaches and times.

Dolphin watching: Spinner and bottlenose dolphins are often seen on the way.

Best time to visit

The best season is October to May, when the sea is usually calm and visibility is good. Parts of the reserve may be closed to visitors during turtle nesting season (usually May to October). We will advise you on the current rules.

Getting there

Boats leave from the marinas at Al Mouj (Muscat) or Barka. The drive from central Muscat is about 45 minutes, followed by a boat ride of around 40 to 60 minutes. Visits are only possible with a licensed boat operator.

Travel tips

Use reef-safe sunscreen and never touch or stand on the coral.

Bring a towel, a hat and a light long-sleeved top for sun protection on the boat.

Need snorkeling gear? Rent it from us in advance.

Sur & Ras al Jinz: dhows and sea turtles

Sur is a historic seafaring town on the eastern coast of Oman. For centuries its sailors traded with East Africa and India, and its craftsmen built the famous wooden dhows by hand. Today, the town’s lagoon, white houses and watchtowers make it one of the most charming places on the coast.

Just south of Sur, the beaches of Ras al Jinz are one of the most important nesting sites for endangered green turtles in the Indian Ocean. Watching a turtle lay her eggs on the sand at night is a moment you will never forget.

Top things to see and do

Dhow shipyard: See master craftsmen building traditional wooden dhows using skills passed down for generations.

Al Ayjah and the lighthouse: Cross the lagoon to the old quarter of Al Ayjah and enjoy the view of Sur from the lighthouse.

Turtle watching at Ras al Jinz: Join a guided night or dawn tour at the Ras al Jinz Turtle Reserve to watch turtles nesting and, in season, hatchlings running to the sea.

Wadi Tiwi and Wadi Shab: Stop at these beautiful wadis on the drive from Muscat. See Wadi Shab and Bimmah Sinkhole.

Best time to visit

Turtles nest at Ras al Jinz all year, but the peak season is June to October. Hatchlings are most often seen from August to November. Turtle tours must be booked in advance, and numbers are limited.

Getting there

Sur is about 2.5 to 3 hours by car from Muscat on the coastal highway. Ras al Jinz is about 45 minutes further south. Many visitors stay overnight at the reserve or in Sur.

Travel tips

Flash photography and torches are not allowed during turtle viewing. Follow the guide’s instructions.

Never touch the turtles or hatchlings.

Bimmah Sinkhole: nature’s swimming pool

Hidden inside the Hawiyat Najm Park near the coast, Bimmah Sinkhole is a large limestone hole filled with clear blue-green water. Local legend says it was made by a falling star, which is why it is also called Hawiyat Najm, “the hole of the star”. In reality, it formed when the ground collapsed over an underground cave. Its water is a mix of fresh water and seawater that seeps in from the nearby sea.

Top things to see and do

Swim in the sinkhole: Concrete steps lead down to the water. The pool is deep and refreshing.

Fish spa: Small fish gently nibble at your feet if you stand still in the shallows.

Picnic in the park: The surrounding park has shaded seating and is a nice place for a break.

Coastal road trip: Bimmah is right on the way to Wadi Shab and Wadi Tiwi, so you can see all three in one day.

Best time to visit

Visit between October and April, ideally in the morning before the park gets busy. Entry to the park is free.

Getting there

The sinkhole is about 1.5 hours by car from Muscat on the coastal highway to Sur. Take the exit for Hawiyat Najm Park near the village of Dibab.

Travel tips

Wear modest swimwear, such as a T-shirt and shorts.

The water is deep, so only confident swimmers should go far from the steps.

Jumping from the rocks is dangerous and is not allowed.

Wadi Bani Khalid: an oasis of turquoise water

Wadi Bani Khalid is one of the few wadis in Oman with water all year round. In the middle of a rocky desert landscape, emerald and turquoise pools are surrounded by palm trees and smooth boulders. It is an ideal place to swim and relax, and the easiest of the famous wadis to reach.

Top things to see and do

Swim in the main pools: A short, paved path leads from the car park to the large, calm pools at the entrance.

Walk upstream: Follow the trail and boulder-hop for 20 to 30 minutes to quieter, deeper pools and narrow gorges.

Moqal Cave: Adventurous visitors can explore this small cave further up the wadi. Bring a torch.

Combine with the desert: Wadi Bani Khalid is on the way to Wahiba Sands, making it a perfect stop before a night in the dunes.

Best time to visit

You can visit all year round, but October to April is the most comfortable. Go early on weekdays. Fridays and holidays are very busy with local families.

Getting there

The wadi is about 2.5 hours by car from Muscat, and about 1 hour from the edge of Wahiba Sands. The road is paved all the way to the car park.

Travel tips

Wear a T-shirt and shorts over your swimwear. Bikinis are not appropriate here.

Water shoes help on the slippery rocks.

There is a small restaurant near the main pools, but bring water and snacks if you walk further.

Misfat al Abriyeen: a village frozen in time

Built on a rocky hillside above a green valley, Misfat al Abriyeen is one of the best-preserved traditional villages in Oman. Its stone and mud-brick houses are connected by narrow alleys and shaded passageways. Below, a centuries-old falaj irrigation system brings water to terraces of date palms, bananas and mango trees.

Unlike many heritage villages, Misfat is still home to local families, so a visit here is a real glimpse of mountain life.

Top things to see and do

Walk the old lanes: Wander through the stepped alleys and arched passages of the old quarter.

The falaj and gardens: Follow the water channels into the shady palm and fruit gardens below the village.

Stay in a heritage guesthouse: Several restored houses offer simple, charming rooms and home-cooked Omani food.

Al Hamra: Visit the nearby town of Al Hamra, with its old mud-brick quarter and the Bait al Safah living museum.

Best time to visit

Visit between October and April. Morning and late afternoon are the most pleasant times to explore.

Getting there

Misfat is about 3 hours by car from Muscat, just above Al Hamra and on the road to Jebel Shams. Park at the entrance of the village and continue on foot.

Travel tips

This is a living village. Dress modestly, keep your voice down and do not enter private gardens or homes.

Look for the signs asking visitors to respect local customs, and follow them.

Ask permission before taking photos of residents.

Jebel Shams: the roof of Oman

Jebel Shams, the “Mountain of the Sun”, is the highest mountain in Oman at just over 3,000 metres. Its most famous sight is Wadi Ghul, known as the Grand Canyon of Oman. Here, sheer cliffs drop around 1,000 metres to the valley floor. Standing at the edge of the canyon is an unforgettable experience.

Top things to see and do

Canyon viewpoints: Several viewpoints along the plateau offer dramatic views into Wadi Ghul.

The Balcony Walk (W6): This famous trail follows a ledge along the canyon wall to the abandoned village of As Sab. It takes around 3 hours return and is suitable for fit walkers with a good head for heights.

Sunrise and sunset: The light on the cliffs is spectacular early and late in the day.

Local crafts: Villagers sell handwoven goat-wool rugs along the road.

Camping under the stars: The plateau is a popular spot for camping, with cool nights and clear skies.

Best time to visit

The best time is October to April. Winter nights at the top can drop below freezing, so warm clothing is essential. In summer the mountain stays much cooler than the lowlands.

Getting there

Jebel Shams is about 3.5 hours by car from Muscat via Nizwa and Al Hamra. The last section is steep and partly unpaved, so a 4×4 is strongly recommended. It combines well with Misfat al Abriyeen and Nizwa.

Travel tips

There are no barriers at most viewpoints. Stay well back from the edge.

Start hikes early and carry at least 2 litres of water per person.

Do not feed the goats, and take all your rubbish with you.

Planning to camp? Rent camping gear from us.

Jebel Akhdar: the Green Mountain

At around 2,000 metres above sea level, the Saiq Plateau of Jebel Akhdar feels like another world. The air is cool, and ancient villages cling to the edges of deep canyons. Terraced gardens grow pomegranates, walnuts, apricots and the famous Damask roses used to make Omani rosewater.

It is the perfect escape from the heat of the coast and one of the most scenic regions in the country.

Top things to see and do

The village trail: Walk the easy path linking the old villages of Al Ain, Al Aqar and Saiq through terraced gardens and along falaj channels.

Diana’s Viewpoint: Enjoy one of the most famous views in Oman, especially at sunrise.

Rose season: In spring, the terraces turn pink. Visit a traditional rosewater distillery to see how it is made.

Pomegranate season: In late summer the trees are heavy with fruit, and fresh juice is sold in the villages.

Stay overnight: Mountain resorts and guesthouses offer stunning canyon views and cool nights.

Best time to visit

Jebel Akhdar is pleasant all year round. Summer temperatures are much cooler than in Muscat. The rose harvest is usually in March and April. Winter nights can be cold, sometimes near freezing, so pack warm layers.

Getting there

The plateau is about 2.5 hours by car from Muscat via Birkat al Mouz, near Nizwa. A police checkpoint at the foot of the mountain only allows 4×4 vehicles to drive up the steep road, so travelling with us or in a rented 4×4 is essential.

Travel tips

Bring a warm jacket from November to February.

The village paths are narrow and have some steps, so wear good walking shoes.

Respect private gardens and homes, and stay on the marked paths.

Bahla & Jabrin: forts, castles and ancient walls

Just beyond Nizwa lie two of the most impressive monuments in Arabia. Bahla Fort is a vast mud-brick fortress and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is surrounded by an oasis town and a wall that once stretched for kilometres. A short drive away, Jabrin Castle is often called the most beautiful castle in Oman, famous for its painted ceilings and elegant rooms.

Top things to see and do

Bahla Fort: Walk through the restored towers and courtyards of this enormous adobe fort, built mainly between the 13th and 14th centuries.

Bahla old town and oasis: Explore the palm gardens, falaj water channels and remains of the old town wall.

Bahla pottery: The town has a long tradition of clay pottery. Visit a local workshop and see the potters at work.

Jabrin Castle: Built in the late 17th century as a palace, it has beautifully decorated wooden ceilings, hidden staircases and a rooftop with views over the palm groves.

Best time to visit

Visit between October and April, in the morning when the light is soft and the temperature is comfortable. Check opening days before you go, as hours can change on Fridays and public holidays.

Getting there

Bahla is about 2 hours by car from Muscat and 30 minutes beyond Nizwa. Jabrin is about 10 to 15 minutes from Bahla. Both fit perfectly into a day trip with Nizwa.

Travel tips

Wear comfortable shoes, as there are many steep steps and uneven floors.

Bring water and a hat, because the courtyards can be hot even in winter.

Allow about an hour for each site.
