Misfat al Abriyeen: a village frozen in time
Built on a rocky hillside above a green valley, Misfat al Abriyeen is one of the best-preserved traditional villages in Oman. Its stone and mud-brick houses are connected by narrow alleys and shaded passageways. Below, a centuries-old falaj irrigation system brings water to terraces of date palms, bananas and mango trees.
Unlike many heritage villages, Misfat is still home to local families, so a visit here is a real glimpse of mountain life.
Top things to see and do
- Walk the old lanes: Wander through the stepped alleys and arched passages of the old quarter.
- The falaj and gardens: Follow the water channels into the shady palm and fruit gardens below the village.
- Stay in a heritage guesthouse: Several restored houses offer simple, charming rooms and home-cooked Omani food.
- Al Hamra: Visit the nearby town of Al Hamra, with its old mud-brick quarter and the Bait al Safah living museum.
Best time to visit
Visit between October and April. Morning and late afternoon are the most pleasant times to explore.
Getting there
Misfat is about 3 hours by car from Muscat, just above Al Hamra and on the road to Jebel Shams. Park at the entrance of the village and continue on foot.
