Jebel Shams: the roof of Oman
Jebel Shams, the “Mountain of the Sun”, is the highest mountain in Oman at just over 3,000 metres. Its most famous sight is Wadi Ghul, known as the Grand Canyon of Oman. Here, sheer cliffs drop around 1,000 metres to the valley floor. Standing at the edge of the canyon is an unforgettable experience.
Top things to see and do
- Canyon viewpoints: Several viewpoints along the plateau offer dramatic views into Wadi Ghul.
- The Balcony Walk (W6): This famous trail follows a ledge along the canyon wall to the abandoned village of As Sab. It takes around 3 hours return and is suitable for fit walkers with a good head for heights.
- Sunrise and sunset: The light on the cliffs is spectacular early and late in the day.
- Local crafts: Villagers sell handwoven goat-wool rugs along the road.
- Camping under the stars: The plateau is a popular spot for camping, with cool nights and clear skies.
Best time to visit
The best time is October to April. Winter nights at the top can drop below freezing, so warm clothing is essential. In summer the mountain stays much cooler than the lowlands.
Getting there
Jebel Shams is about 3.5 hours by car from Muscat via Nizwa and Al Hamra. The last section is steep and partly unpaved, so a 4×4 is strongly recommended. It combines well with Misfat al Abriyeen and Nizwa.
Travel tips
- There are no barriers at most viewpoints. Stay well back from the edge.
- Start hikes early and carry at least 2 litres of water per person.
