Nizwa: the heart of Omani heritage

Nizwa was once the capital of Oman. Today it is one of the best places to experience traditional Omani life. The town sits in a green oasis of date palms at the foot of the Hajar Mountains. It is crowned by the huge round tower of Nizwa Fort and the blue-and-gold dome of its Friday Mosque.

Come for the history, stay for the souq. Nizwa is famous for its silver jewellery, pottery, halwa and the lively animal market held every Friday morning.

Top things to see and do

  • Nizwa Fort: Climb the massive 17th-century round tower for wide views over the palm groves and the mountains. Inside, small exhibitions explain daily life in old Oman.
  • Nizwa Souq: Separate souqs sell fruit and vegetables, fish, meat, spices, pottery, silver and khanjars (traditional daggers). It is a great place to buy authentic souvenirs.
  • Friday Goat Market: Early every Friday, farmers gather to buy and sell goats, sheep and cattle in a lively auction circle. It is one of the most authentic scenes in Oman.
  • Omani halwa: Taste this sweet, sticky dessert flavoured with rosewater and saffron, served with a cup of kahwa.
  • Nearby day trips: Combine Nizwa with Bahla Fort and Jabrin Castle, Misfat al Abriyeen or Jebel Akhdar.

Best time to visit

The best months are October to April. Visit on a Friday morning to see the goat market, and arrive by 7:30 am because it ends early.

Getting there

Nizwa is about 1.5 hours by car from Muscat on a good highway. It makes an easy day trip or a perfect base for exploring the interior of Oman.

Travel tips

  • Dress modestly, with shoulders and knees covered, as Nizwa is a conservative town.
  • Ask before photographing people, especially women.
  • Bring cash for small purchases in the souq.
