Wadi Shab: hike, swim and discover a hidden cave
Wadi Shab is one of the most beautiful canyons in Oman and a favourite day trip from Muscat. Steep rock walls rise on both sides of a green valley full of palm trees, and at the end of the trail a series of turquoise pools is waiting for you.
The adventure starts with a short boat ride across the water at the mouth of the wadi, near the village of Tiwi. It continues with a scenic hike and ends with a swim through the pools to a cave with a small waterfall inside.
Top things to see and do
- The boat crossing: A local boatman takes you across the lake at the entrance in a couple of minutes.
- The hike: Follow the trail for about 45 to 60 minutes each way, past palm groves, old falaj irrigation channels and towering cliffs.
- Swimming in the pools: The deep, clear pools are perfect for cooling off after the walk.
- The hidden cave: Strong swimmers can swim through a narrow gap in the rock into a cave with a waterfall. It is the most famous moment of the trip.
- Combine it with the coast: Wadi Shab is close to Bimmah Sinkhole and Wadi Tiwi, so you can see all three in one day.
Best time to visit
Visit between October and April for comfortable hiking. Start early in the morning to avoid the heat and the crowds, especially on Fridays and Saturdays.
Getting there
Wadi Shab is about 1.5 to 2 hours by car from Muscat along the coastal highway towards Sur. The parking area and boat station are just below the highway bridge near Tiwi.
Travel tips
- Wear good shoes or sandals with grip for the rocky trail, and bring water shoes for the pools.
- Use a dry bag for your phone and valuables, since you will need to swim to reach the cave.
- Dress modestly on the trail and in the villages. Wear a T-shirt and shorts over your swimwear.
- Bring plenty of water and snacks. There are no shops inside the wadi.
- Never enter the wadi when rain is forecast, because flash floods can be dangerous.
